The three Diapontia islands have no airport and no other scheduled link than the sea, and from Corfu one boat covers all of them: the Evdokia of Kerkyra Lines, a small car ferry of 44 metres for 150 passengers and 20 vehicles. It sails from the port of Corfu Town and calls at the islands in turn, Ereikoussa first, then Mathraki, then Othoni, which is why the same departure means very different crossing times depending on where you get off.
Kerkyra Lines gives about 2 hours 30 minutes to Ereikoussa, about 3 hours 20 minutes to Mathraki with the stop at Ereikoussa, and about 4 hours to Othoni with stops at both. The line runs on a few days a week, three sailings a week in the current timetable, and the return does not always fall on the same day as the outward trip. Book the day back first.
Departure and check-in in Corfu Town
The Evdokia leaves from the port of Corfu Town, where Kerkyra Lines also runs its Igoumenitsa ferries and its Paxos boats. Buy the ticket online or at the company's office at the port and be at the ship 30 minutes before departure as a foot passenger, or bring the vehicle to the loading area one hour before. Tickets are personal and valid only for the booked sailing; passengers with reduced fares show the document that proves the entitlement at boarding.
On board
Expect a small car ferry for a coastal run, not a cruise ship: seats inside and on deck and space for a handful of cars alongside the supplies the islands depend on. Hand luggage travels with you, up to 50 kilos per passenger at no charge. On a crossing of up to four hours along Corfu's northwest coast, the open deck is where most passengers spend the trip.
Vehicles, bicycles and pets
Cars, motorcycles and bicycles travel on the vehicle deck; with 20 vehicle spaces the boat fills quickly, so book the vehicle with the ticket rather than at the ramp. Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles may board only with a battery charge of up to 40 per cent, must not be charged on board and have to be reported to the crew one hour before departure. Pets travel in the designated areas of the ship; small animals may join their owners inside if they are in a carrier or muzzled and vaccinated.
Arrival and onward travel
On Ereikoussa the boat lands at Porto, the island's main village on the south coast, with rooms and tavernas within walking distance. On Mathraki it calls at Plaka, the main landing on the east side; the second harbour, Apidia, lies on the west coast and the island's settlements string out between them. On Othoni, the largest of the three, the harbour is Ammos on the south coast, with the island's accommodation and beach. The islands are small enough to explore on foot, by bicycle or with a car brought on the boat; note the day of the next departure back in the timetable before you leave the harbour.
Tickets and fares
The fare is per passenger, with reduced fares for children and other entitled groups and the vehicle priced by category. Kerkyra Lines allows free changes up to an hour before departure and refunds cancellations on a sliding scale that ends 12 hours before sailing.
